The PSTN Switch-Off Is Six Months Away: Why Businesses Must Act Now

By Adam Monaghan, Solutions Director, F One Technologies

The countdown to one of the biggest changes in UK business communications has entered its final phase.

On 31 January 2027, the UK’s Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) will be permanently retired, bringing an end to the copper-based network that has supported telephone services for decades. While millions of homes and businesses have already migrated to modern digital services, Openreach estimates that around 1.5 million lines remain on the legacy network, including approximately 350,000 business locations.

To help accelerate the transition, Openreach has launched its Big Switch Off campaign, urging communications providers and businesses to take immediate action before the deadline arrives.

Why This Matters

The PSTN supports far more than traditional phone calls.

In my conversations with businesses across the UK, I regularly find organisations still relying on PSTN-connected devices and services such as:

  • Telephone systems
  • Card payment terminals
  • Lift emergency alarms
  • Security and monitoring systems
  • Door entry systems
  • Building management equipment
  • Other operational technologies

When the PSTN is switched off, any services still dependent on the network may stop functioning unless they have been upgraded or replaced with digital alternatives.

The Cost of Waiting

Businesses that postpone migration face several risks.

Operational disruption could affect customer service, productivity and business continuity. As we move closer to the deadline, demand for engineering support is expected to increase significantly, potentially making migrations more difficult to schedule.

There is also a growing financial incentive to move sooner rather than later. Openreach has introduced substantial increases to wholesale line rental pricing for legacy services, with a 40 per cent increase already implemented and a further 40 per cent rise scheduled. In many cases, moving to fibre-based connectivity and modern IP services can now provide a more cost-effective solution.

How We Can Help

At F One Technologies, we’ve been helping businesses modernise their communications and connectivity for years. My team and I can assess your existing infrastructure, identify any services that rely on the PSTN and develop a tailored migration plan that minimises disruption.

The switch-off deadline is fixed and there will be no extension. Businesses need to understand exactly which systems are still connected to the PSTN and make plans now to replace or upgrade them. The sooner organisations begin that process, the more options they’ll have and the smoother the transition will be.

Many customers are surprised to discover that it’s not just their phone system that could be affected. Payment terminals, alarm systems, lift lines and other critical services often depend on the PSTN. Our role is to identify those risks, recommend the right solutions and manage the migration from start to finish.

Preparing for a Digital Future

The retirement of the PSTN is part of the UK’s wider digital transformation, replacing ageing infrastructure with modern IP-based services that deliver greater reliability, flexibility and performance.

From my perspective, this isn’t simply about replacing old technology. It’s an opportunity for businesses to improve resilience, support hybrid working, strengthen customer communications and take advantage of the latest cloud-based services.

Don’t Leave It Too Late

With the PSTN switch-off now only months away, I would urge every organisation that has not yet reviewed its communications infrastructure to act immediately.

At F One Technologies, we can help you understand your exposure, identify affected services and create a clear roadmap to ensure your business is ready well before 31 January 2027.

If you’d like to discuss your PSTN migration strategy, please get in touch with our team today. The sooner you start planning, the easier and more cost-effective your transition is likely to be.
